Celebrating 40 Years of Range Rover Success

It was in 1970 when the first Range Rover came out of the Land Rover factory in Solihull, England as a more stylish upmarket and urbanized version of its iconic all-terrain all wheel drive utilitarian Land Rover series.

That model enjoyed a production run from 1970 until 1996 and has been rebadged as the Range Rover Classic to distinguish it from its more modern versions.

This year, the Jaguar Land Rover division of the Tata Motors Company of India is celebrating the Range Rover's 40th anniversary as it recently unveiled the Autobiography Black 40th Anniversary Limited Edition 2011 Range Rover.

The ravishing new range Rover was unfurled at a motorsports gathering at the Quail, held at the prestigious Golf Club and Quail Lodge Resort in Carmel, California. The occasion marks a major part of the annual Pebble Beach weekend traditionally organized as a showcase of vintage and modern automobiles and race cars. Land Rover is known as a sponsor of The Quail event.

Announced as the most luxurious and exclusive Range Rover ever built, the 2011 Autobiography Block 40th Anniversary Limited Edition Range Rover sports a Barolo Black exterior finish, a 20-inch 10-spoked Diamond Turned alloy wheels, a Titan front grille with a bright chrome edging and black surround, a tailgate badge "Autobiography Black," and body colored door handles. Even the side vents will have a new mesh consisting of black vent surrounds and bright chrome bars to match the front grille.

Gerry McGovern, Land Rover design director, says "At the top of the Range, the new Autobiography Black 40th anniversary limited edition offers customers the option of complete exclusivity with unique colourway combinations as well as striking interior and exterior design features. Only 700 will be made globally, emphasizing the exclusivity of this limited edition."

Open the door and what greets the incoming passenger is an illuminated set of sill plates. The interior color scheme offers a choice of two-toned colourways unique to the Autobiography Black - Jet and Pimento or Jet and Ivory. The doors, instrumental panel and center console are trimmed with Grand Black lacquer veneers with Autobiography Black emblem, a steering wheel made of half wood Grand Black and gear knob veneers for the supercharged models, as well as the Autobiography Black logo embossed on the rear seat armrest.

But the exclusive refinements are more than just skin deep, the Autobiography Black comes with all the driving safety and luxury features of the standard 2010 Range Rover. It is equipped with an innovatively enhanced Terrain Response system that adds Gradient Acceleration control.

This is designed to provide extra safety when the Hill Start Assist is not engaged. The Hill Start Assist prevents the SUV from rolling back when in a standstill on a steep road incline

The 40th anniversary model is based on the 2011 Range Rover powered by the same 5.0-liter, 510 Bhp supercharged V8 engine with direct fuel injection. It delivers a torque of 461 lb-ft that allows it to accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 5.9 seconds.
